Summer 2013 Remedial Task

Feedback

ESO Students,

Here is your 2013 summer remedial assignment:
  • You should solve the activities of the 9 'Self Check' pages that you will find at the end of every unit of your Workbook.
  • You should also complete the three revision sections found at the end of every three units in your student's book: review A (units 1, 2, 3), review B (units 4, 5, 6) and review C (units 7, 8, 9).
Use an A-4 sized notebook to copy the formulation or wording of every activity and underline their key words. Then, translate that wording into Galician/Spanish and solve the activities.

This assignment is NOT COMPULSORY. You do not need to hand in your homework as it will NOT ADD ANY POINTS AT ALL TO YOUR SEPTEMBER MARK. However, we would like to advise you to prepare these activities if you want to be successful in your September remedial exams.

The Futility of Comparing Yourself to Others, by Leo Babauta

Feedback

(Reblogged from Zenhabits)

One of the biggest reasons we’re not content with ourselves and our lives is that we compare ourselves to other people.

Picture it: you see photos of what someone else is doing on Facebook and think your life isn’t exciting enough. You see someone else who has a cool job and think you’re not doing that great in your career. You see someone with a hotter body, and feel bad about yours. You see someone who has created an awesome business, and think you’re not doing enough. You read about people who are traveling the world, learning languages, going to exotic resorts and restaurants, and wonder why you’re not.

2013 ESO 4 Best Graduation Speech

Feedback

ESO 4 Students,

Here is Alejandro Penín's graduation speech. It is the best speech in ESO 4 this year, not only because of its contents, wit. irony and good humour, but also because he delivered it with a fairly good pronunciation, rhythm and fluency and his stance, posture and eye-contact with the audience were remarkable. Congratulations, Alejandro! And you have earned yourself 2 extra points for volunteering to deliver your speech at the ESO 4 Graduation event to be held next June 21st.

Good afternoon, parents, grandparents, brothers, sisters, partners… even teachers. Thanks a lot for being here today.

I am supposed to tell you I am very excited about my future, thrilled about my new life ahead and all that stuff, but that would not be true. What reallly scares me is present, because I don´t like speaking in public. I have tried at home with my family, I have tried in front of my friends, I have even tried in front of a mirror; but I always feel embarrassed, so please excuse my babbling and stuttering.

Grammar Lessons with Food

Feedback
Dear students,

Here you have a funny video which explains some basic grammar points with food as a background:

1. Your vs. You're.
2. Hyphens.
3. Homophones.
4. Complement vs. Compliment.
5. Quotes.
6. Compound Subjects.
7. Than vs. Then.
8. Fewer vs. Less.
9. Would've vs Would of*.
10. Literally.

Surprisingly, some of these mistakes (such as your/you're, than/then or would've/would of*) are made by native English speakers above all. Non-native speakers focus heavily on grammar while learning English. Conversely, native speakers are usually tricked by their flawless pronunciation, which makes them confused when distinguishing, for instance, between 'than' and 'then' in oral speech.

Enjoy!

Cate Blanchett as Queen Elizabeth in the film 'Elizabeth: The Golden Age'.
Could the virgin queen be a part of the biggest deception in British history?

The bones of Elizabeth I, Good Queen Bess, lie mingled with those of her sister, Bloody Mary, in a single tomb at Westminster Abbey. But are they really royal remains — or evidence of the greatest conspiracy in English history?

If that is not the skeleton of Elizabeth Tudor, the past four centuries of British history have been founded on a lie.

And according to a controversial new book, the lie began on an autumn morning 470 years ago, when panic swept through a little group of courtiers in a manor house in the Cotswold village of Bisley in Gloucestershire.

The Next Cabaye: Iago Aspas

Who's Cabaye? The answer is here

(Reblogged from Peripheral Vision)
Scouting isn’t rocket science! Every time a Premier League side signs a good foreign player the nation goes crazy. Who is this mystery guy? Where did he come from? Anyone with a decent knowledge of the game outside the UK would have known that the likes of Santi Cazorla, Oscar and Papisse Demba Cissé were likely to succeed, and there are plenty more of them out there. So who’s the next “secret” star to watch out for? Who is the next Cabaye?

Celta Vigo defy odds, by Sid Lowe

Celta Vigo defy odds as four becomes relegated three in La Liga finale

Abel Resino's side had only a 22.2% chance of survival, but they stayed up as Zaragoza, Deportivo and Mallorca went down
Celta Vigo's goalkeeper Ruben Blanco celebrates with supporters

In the 89th minute of the 38th week six teams' fates hung on one goal. All across the country they were reaching for the defibrillator, destination unknown. Garlic cloves were strewn across the turf, Virgin Marys kissed and rekissed. Fans crossed themselves again and wedged earpieces in as far as they would go. The abyss opened below them, a light shone above them. Even those who had given up couldn't allow themselves to actually give up, a lifeline suddenly laid before them. Roberto Soldado had just scored for Valencia. At the same time, Hélder Postiga put away a penalty for Real Zaragoza. Just then watches, synchronised at the start, ticked up to 89:00.

Dear Sixteen Year Old Me

Feedback

Summer is almost here. Those of us living in Vigo or anywhere along the Galician coast are lucky for being able to enjoy the beach and the sun. Still, there are some people who feel embarrassed on the first day they wear their swimsuit at the beach, due to their pale skin colour got during winter. Some wrongly decide to start using the tanning bed a few weeks before to get a “healthy” glow. Others believe not using sunscreen while sunbathing will lead to a faster natural tan... Owing to this, here at LEZ we would like to revive a fairly old video entitled “Dear Sixteen Year Old Me”, which we are sure some of you have already watched.

Yessss!! We Stay Top!!

Feedback

(Reblogged from ESPN)

Natxo Insa scored the only goal as RC Celta survived relegation from the Primera División with a close win over Español. The midfielder struck after 15 minutes as the home side avoided the drop to the delight of a packed Balaidos as overjoyed fans swarmed on to the pitch at the final whistle.

RC Celta stayed up at the expense of RCD A Coruña, who were relegated after being beaten 1-0 at home by Real Sociedad. Espanyol went close when Simao Sabrosa sent in a free-kick from the right but RC Celta goalkeeper Ruben Blanco proved equal to the effort after four minutes.
