<div style="text-align: justify;">
ESO 4 Students,</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
This is your PBL assignment for the 3rd term. It is a VOLUNTARY PBL.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">You have to WRITE and DELIVER your GRADUATION SPEECH. You have to imagine you are going to stand in the school Assembly Hall before your teachers, classmates, parents and guests at your ESO graduation ceremony and deliver your speech, which must be <b>at least 350 WORDS LONG.</b></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The best student will be offered the chance to deliver his or her speech at your graduation ceremony... in English!! Of course, he or she will get extra points in the final mark for that effort.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br />
<a name='more'></a></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Delivering a speech requires previous work (<a href="https://www.wikihow.com/Deliver-a-Graduation-Speech" target="_blank">how to deliver a graduation speech</a>). First, you have to put together basic ideas and thoughts. Then, you have to draft, revise and polish your text up. Finally, you have to practise your oral presentation. It is a good idea to do this in front of some relatives or friends, in front of a mirror or even to shoot an informal video of yourself using your phone or a webcam. Pay attention to both your "sound" and your "image". If you do this you will be able to find out your weak points and can try to fix them.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px; margin: 0px;">
Points will be deducted not only for poor content, but also for bad spelling, punctuation and/or formatting in your written work. As you will have to do an oral presentation, points will also be deducted for bad pronunciation, poor fluency and rhythm. Clear, well-structured ideas, catching the audience interest, good pronunciation and a clear, loud voice and a little humour will boost your mark.</div>
</div>
<div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px; margin: 0px;">
<br /></div>
</div>
</div>
<div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px; margin: 0px;">
<b>IMPORTANT:</b> You must follow the same formatting rules as for the rest of school projects: The font must be 'Century Gothic', size 12; 1.5 line spacing, justified text, page numbers at the bottom centre of each page.</div>
</div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
This is your work <b>schedule:</b></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
</div>
<ul>
<li style="text-align: justify;"><b>Thursday 4th April -</b> Print this post at home and bring it to school. </li>
<li style="text-align: justify;"><b>Before 23:59:59 on Friday 17th May</b> your speech AND your reading notes or checklist (see NB# 3 below) in one (and only one) PDF file have to reach our <a href="mailto:alvaro.deprado@colegiolabor.com" target="_blank">e-mail</a>. Your file name MUST be as follows:</li>
</ul>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Class_Number_Name_1stSurname.pdf - Example: 4A_1_Brais_Carballo.pdf</div>
</div>
<ul>
<li style="text-align: justify;"><b>From Monday 20th May,</b> You will have to stand before your class and deliver your speeches.</li>
</ul>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Points will be deducted for every instruction you do not follow.<br />
<br /><b>NB #1: You CANNOT READ your speech; you must DELIVER IT BY HEART.</b></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><b><br /></b></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><b>NB #2: The use of ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE is COMPLETELY FORBIDDEN. You must write the speech yourselves, without the aid of any technological tools.<br /></b>
<b><br /></b>
<b>NB #3: You cannot bring your speech in writing to the lectern; you will only be allowed ONE (and only one) sheet of paper including a CHECKLIST OR READING NOTES comprising a MAXIMUM OF 10 SHORT SENTENCES. Every student will show that checklist to the teacher before approaching the lectern.</b></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Here is an example outline of how your graduation speech should be. DO NOT EVER START WRITING ANY SECTION OF YOUR SPEECH IN SPANISH: do it all in English from the very beginning or your result will indeed be very poor. At the end of this post you can also find links with useful advice, hints and ideas:</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<b>1. Introduction (Present)</b></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
1.1 Greet the audience.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
1.2 Thank them for coming.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
1.3 Make some remarks about your feelings and how excited you are to be graduating.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
1.4 Present an idea or motto connected with the school, education, life, etc.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<b>2. About You (Past)</b></div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
2.3 Tell how you could "not have got where you are without ____".</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<b>3. Thank You (Past)</b></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
3.1 Say you would like to thank a few people specifically for all of their help:</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
3.1.2 Thank your mother, your father and family... maybe some friends...</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
3.1.3 Thank and acknowledge whatever mentor or teacher influenced you the most (in a good way).</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">

<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<b>4. Conclusion (Future)</b></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
4.1 Tell the audience about your expectations for the future.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
4.2 Go back to your introduction and repeat your initial idea or motto.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
4.3 Wish your classmates a happy and safe end-of-school trip.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
4.4 Express your good wishes for everybody's future... and especially your classmates'.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">

<div style="text-align: justify;">
4.6 Thank everybody once again for being there and for their attention.</div>

<br /></div>
<div>
<div style="text-align: auto;"><div style="text-align: justify;">In Christian tradition the Magi (pronounced /ˈmeɪdʒaɪ/; from the Greek: <i>μάγοι, magoi</i>, usually translated as "wise men", although it probably meant "astronomer" or "astrologer"... that is why they were following a star), also referred to as the (Three) Wise Men, (Three) Kings, or Kings from the East, are said to have visited Jesus after his birth, bearing gifts.Traditions identify a variety of different names for the Magi. In the Western Christian church they have been commonly known since the 8th century as Caspar, Melchior, and Balthasar. In the Gospel of Matthew, the only one to describe the visit of the Magi, it states that they came "from the east" to worship the Christ, "born King of the Jews". Although Matthew does not mention their number, because three gifts are recorded as having been given to the Christ Child, traditionally there are thought to have been three Magi. The Magi, as the "Three Kings" or "Three Wise Men" are regular figures in traditional accounts of the nativity and in celebrations of Christmas.</div>
<br />
<a name='more'></a></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">Western Christianity celebrates the Magi on the day of Epiphany, January 6, the day immediately following the twelve days of Christmas, particularly in the Spanish-speaking parts of the world. In these Spanish-speaking areas, the three kings receive wish letters from children and magically bring them gifts on the night before Epiphany. In Spain, each one of the Magi is supposed to represent one different continent, Europe (Caspar), Asia (Melchior) and Africa (Balthasar). According to the tradition, the Magi come from the Orient on their camels to visit the houses of all the children; much like Santa Claus with his reindeer, they visit everyone in one night. In some areas, children prepare a drink for each of the Magi, it is also traditional to prepare food and drink for the camels, because this is the only night of the year when they eat.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div></div><div style="text-align: justify;">
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Spanish cities organize parades (<i>cabalgatas</i>) in the evening, in which the kings and their servants parade and throw sweets to the children (and parents) in attendance. The cavalcade of the three kings in Alcoi claims to be the oldest in the world; the participants who portray the kings and pages walk through the crowd, giving presents to the children directly.<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
</div>
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Matthew 2:1-12 describes the visit of the 3 Magi:</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<i>After Jesus was born in Bethlehem in Judea, during the time of King Herod, Magi from the east came to Jerusalem and asked, Where is the one who has been born king of the Jews? We saw his star in the east and have come to worship him. When King Herod heard this he was disturbed, and all Jerusalem with him. When he had called together all the people's chief priests and teachers of the law, he asked them where the Christ was to be born. In Bethlehem in Judea, they replied, for this is what the prophet has written: 'But you, Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, are by no means least among the rulers of Judah; for out of you will come a ruler who will be the shepherd of my people Israel.' Then Herod called the Magi secretly and found out from them the exact time the star had appeared. He sent them to Bethlehem and said, Go and make a careful search for the child. As soon as you find him, report to me, so that I too may go and worship him. After they had heard the king, they went on their way, and the star they had seen in the east went ahead of them until it stopped over the place where the child was. When they saw the star, they were overjoyed. On coming to the house, they saw the child with his mother Mary, and they bowed down and worshiped him. Then they opened their treasures and presented him with gifts of gold and of incense and of myrrh. And having been warned in a dream not to go back to Herod, they returned to their country by another route.</i><br />

Now you already now the story of the Three Wise Men of the East, and how they travelled from far away to offer their gifts at the manger-cradle in Bethlehem. But have you ever heard the story of Artaban, the Other Wise Man, who also saw the star in its rising, and set out to follow it, yet did not arrive with the other 3 Wise Men in the presence of the young child Jesus?<br />
<br /></div>
Henry Van Dyke (1852-1933) an American author, educator and clergyman wrote The Story of the Other Wise Man. As you all know, in Spain we eat twelve grapes at midnight. The actual countdown is primarily followed from the clock on top of the Correos building in Puerta del Sol square, Madrid. It is traditional to eat twelve grapes, on on each chime of the clock. This tradition has its origins in 1909, when grape growers in Alicante thought of it as a way to cut down on the large production surplus they had had that year. Nowadays the tradition is followed by almost every Spaniard, and the twelve grapes have become synonimous with the New Year. After the clock has finished striking twelve, people greet each other and toast with sparkling wine (such as champagane or cider).<br />

<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
After the family dinner and the grapes, many young people attend New Year parties at pubs, discos and similar parties usually until the next morning. These celebrations range from small, personal ones at local bars to huge parties with guests numbering the thousands at hotel convention rooms. Early next morning, people usually gather to have the traditional winter breakfast of hot chocolate and fried pastry (<i>chocolate con churros</i>).</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
In English speaking countries they have a somewhat different tradition: of course, it is celebrated with parties and social gatherings, but at the stroke of midnight, people hold each other's hands and sing what is arguably the song most closely associated with this celebration, Auld Lang Syne:<br />
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;"><iframe allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture" allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/5mCWIsmSFN8" width="560"></iframe></div><div style="text-align: center;">
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br />
Auld Lang Syne (/<span face="sans-serif" style="line-height: 24px;">ˈɔːld lɑŋˈsəin/<span style="font-family: "times new roman"; line-height: normal;">) is a Scottish poem part-written by Robert Burns in 1788 and set to the tune of a traditional folf song. By extension, its use has also been common at funerals, graduations, and as a farewell or ending to other occasions.</span></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Its title may be translated into English literally as "old long since", or more idiomatically, "long long ago" o "days gone by" and the song is generally interpreted as a call to remember long standing friendships.</div>
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<div style="text-align: justify;">
In Scotland, people celebrate Hogmanay (/<span face="sans-serif" style="line-height: 19px;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: x-small;">ˌhɔɡməˈneː</span><span style="font-family: "times new roman"; font-size: medium; line-height: normal;">/), </span><span style="font-family: "times new roman"; line-height: normal;">which is the Scots word for the last day of the year and is synonimous with the celebration of New Year. The most widespread national custom is the practice of "first footing" which starts immediately after midnight. This involves being the first person to cross the threshold of a frend of neighbour and often involves the giving of symbolic gifts such as salt, coal, shortbread (a type of biscuit) and black bun (a rich fruit cake) intended to bring different kinds of luck to the householder (the traditions says that to ensure good luck for the house the first food should be a dark male, and he should bring with him symbolic pieces of coal, shortbread, salt, black bun and a little dram of whiskey; traditionally, one must clean the house, take out ashes from the fire, clear all debts before the bells of midnight). Food and drink (as the gifts) are then given to the guests. This may go on throughout the early hours of the morning and well into the next day. The first-foot is supposed to set the luck for the rest of the year.</span></span></div>

It is <b>a belief in the extraordinary ability of each person to touch with goodness and compassion the lives of others and to shine a light in the world around them.</b></span></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-family: arial;"><br /></span></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-family: arial;">This is the essence of our community, and the very foundation of our society. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-jbNQ3y9f8kQ/ULJFan6-CWI/AAAAAAAATMk/XzhWg6SPw1s/s1600/boxing-day.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-jbNQ3y9f8kQ/ULJFan6-CWI/AAAAAAAATMk/XzhWg6SPw1s/s320/boxing-day.jpg" width="286" /></a></div>
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Today is Boxing Day. No, it has nothing to do with the sport of fighting with the fists. This is the reason for the name:</div>
<blockquote>
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , serif; line-height: 20px;"><i>A box, usually of earthenware, in which contributions of money were collected at Christmas, by apprentices, etc.; the box being broken when full, and the contents shared.</i></span></blockquote>
<span face="sans-serif" style="font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;"></span><br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;">So, the name Boxing Day derives from the tradition of giving seasonal gifts, on the day after Christmas, to less wealthy people and social inferiors, which was later extended to various workpeople such as labourers and servants.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;"></span><br />
<a name='more'></a></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;">The traditional recorded celebration of Boxing Day has long included giving money and other gifts to charitable institutions, the needy and people in service positions. The European tradition has been dated to the Middle Ages, but the exact origin is unknown and there are some claims that it go</span>es back to the late Roman / early Christian era.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;">In the United Kingdom it certainly became a custom of the nineteenth century Victorians for tradesmen to collect their "Christmas boxes" or gifts in return for good and reliable service throughout the year on the day after Christmas.</span></div>
<div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
As they do not celebrate Epiphany (The 3 Wise Men or Magi) as we do in Spain, among the British and some other English-speaking countries Boxing Day is primarily known as a shopping holiday: January sales, often with dramatic price decreases, start on this day. For many merchants, Boxing Day has become the day of the year with the greatest revenue (much as the day after Thanksgiving in the United States: Black Friday).</div><div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Recorded on August 22nd, 1966, "7 O'Clock News/Silent Night" is the twelfth and final track on "Parsley, Sage, Rosemary and Thyme", a 1966 album by Simon and Garfunkel. The track consists of an overdubbing of two contrasting recordings: a simple arrangement of the Christmas carol "Silent Night", and a simulated "7 O'Clock News" bulletin of the actual events of 3 August 1966.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br />
<a name='more'></a></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The "Silent Night" track consists of Simon and Garfunkel singing the first verse twice over, accompanied by Garfunkel on piano. The voice of the newscaster is that of Charlie O'Donnell, then a radio disc jockey. As the track progresses, the song becomes fainter and the news report louder. Matthew Greenwald calls the effect "positively chilling". Bruce Eder describes the track as "a grim and ironic (and prophetic) comment on the state of the United States in 1966".</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Simon & Garfunkel are an American singer-songwriter duo consisting of Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel. They formed the group Tom & Jerry in 1957, and had their first taste of success with the minor hit "Hey, Schoolgirl". As Simon & Garfunkel, the duo rose to fame in 1965, backed by the hit single "The Sounds of Silence". Their music was featured in the landmark film "The Graduate", propelling them further into the public consciousness.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
They are well known for their close vocal harmonies and were among the most popular recording artists of the 1960s; among their biggest hits, in addition to "The Sounds of Silence", were "Bridge over Troubled Water", "I Am a Rock", "Homeward Bound", "A Hazy Shade of Winter", "Mrs. Robinson", "The Boxer", "Cecilia", and "Scarborough Fair/Canticle". They have received several Grammys and are inductees in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the Long Island Music Hall of Fame (2007). </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Their sometimes rocky relationship led to their last album, "Bridge over Troubled Water", being delayed several times due to artistic disagreements and as a result the duo broke up in 1970. But Simon and Garfunkel have reunited to perform and sometimes tour together in every decade since the 1970 breakup, most famously for 1981's "The Concert in Central Park," which attracted about 500,000 people, and they have toured very successfully since then.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The following events are reported in the newscast in the song in the order given:</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<ul>
<li>A dispute in the House of Representatives over "the civil rights bill". It is stated that President Johnson had originally proposed a full ban on discrimination for any type of housing — dismissed as "having no chance" — and that "a compromise was painfully worked out in the House Judiciary Committee." </li>
<li>The death of comedian Lenny Bruce from an overdose of narcotics at the age of 42 [actually 40]. </li>
<li>Dr. Martin Luther King reaffirming plans for an open housing Civil Rights march into Cicero, Illinois, a suburb of Chicago. It is stated that Cook County sheriff Richard Ogilvie urged its cancellation, and that Cicero police plan to ask the National Guard to be called in. </li>
<li>The grand jury indictment of Richard Speck for the murder of nine [actually eight] student nurses. </li>
<li>Disruption by protesters at House Un-American Activities Committee hearings into anti-Vietnam War protests </li>
<li>A speech by "former Vice-President Richard Nixon" to the Veterans of Foreign Wars [actually to the American Legion] urging an increase in the war effort in Vietnam, and calling opposition to the war the "single greatest weapon working against the United States".</li>
</ul>
</div>
<ul></ul>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<div style="text-align: -webkit-auto;">

The following article was published by <a href="http://www.prnewswire.com/">PR Newswire</a> on7th December 2010.</div>
</div>
<br />
<a name='more'></a><i>Spain's El Gordo is arguably the most famous lottery game in the world, thanks to its estimated €2.3 billion in prizes available to be won. One of the most lucrative European lotteries, El Gordo takes place on December 22nd each year. Aside from the incredible amount of money players can win with it, many people outside Spain don't know what makes this game a standout among lotteries or why worldwide fans keep playing it year after year.</i><br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<i><br />
</i></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<i>Many lottery fans have heard about El Gordo and the ticket-buying frenzy that grows each year as the draw date approaches. Even so, most players don't understand exactly why this game is unique, or why tickets are so prized among lottery fans.</i></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<i><br />
</i></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<i>That's why European Lottery Guild has put together a list of 8 things you should know about El Gordo:</i></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<i><br />
</i></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<i>1. It's mythic: Radios and televisions are tuned to the broadcast, and the cafés are packed with people watching it. The event is carried out with great pageantry, and schoolchildren sing out the results as each number is drawn. The whole ceremony can take up to 3 hours with celebrations lasting through the night.</i></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<i><br />
</i></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<i>2. It's a winner-maker: The game was designed to make as many winners as possible. Family members often buy tickets together. Occasionally, whole villages find themselves wealthier after the draw.</i></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<i><br />
</i></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<i>3. It's a true lottery: Rather than a lotto, in which players pick a combination of numbers, El Gordo tickets come with the numbers pre-printed on them.</i></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<i><br />
</i></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<i>4. It's a number-lover's fantasy: Ticket numbers range from 0 to 84,999 and there are 195 series of tickets. It's traditional to use significant dates to choose a ticket (even unlucky ones). In 2009, tickets printed with the numbers forming the date of Michael Jackson's death - 25609 - were heavily sought after.</i></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<i><br />
</i></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<i>5. It's deeply traditional: The game was started as a fundraiser for orphans and has been drawn each year since 1812. The procedure followed for the draw has not varied.</i></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<i><br />
</i></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<i>6. It's epic: Because of its unique prize structure, El Gordo can create up to 390 millionaires at a time.</i></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<i><br />
</i></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<i>7. It's possible to win up to 7 times on a single ticket.</i></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<i><br />
</i></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<i>8. Its players are famously philosophical: After the draw's done, it's customary for non-winners to console themselves with the platitude "It's health that really matters."</i></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<i><br />
</i></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<i>"Of course, the El Gordo Lottery's prize pool attracts enormous attention," says Elisabeth Moore, Customer Relations Manager for European Lottery Guild. "After all, it isn't every day that a single lottery makes an estimated EUR2.3 billion in prizes available to be won. But there are many other reasons, some rooted in customs and tradition, why Spanish El Gordo is so beloved."</i></div>

(Reblogged from <a href="https://www.vox.com/culture/2016/11/30/13763408/advent-explained-wreath-calendar-season-nazi-christmas-eisenhower-catholic-christmas" target="_blank">here </a>and <a href="https://www.vox.com/2015/12/25/10661878/12-days-of-christmas-explained" target="_blank">here</a>)</p><div style="text-align: justify;">The word Advent comes from the Latin word for “arrival”: <i>adventus</i>. <b>The celebration of Advent,</b> whether with wreaths in church or calendars at home, <b>marks the beginning of the Christmas period.</b> It’s one of the major seasons celebrated by most Christian churches in the Western tradition: Roman Catholics, Anglicans, Episcopalians, Lutherans, and many additional Protestant churches mark the roughly month-long period with special observance.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">Most Advent calendars start on December 1st, but <b>the actual first day of the Advent season changes every year.</b> <b>In 2023, that day is Sunday 3rd December. The final day is the same every year: December 24th, Christmas Eve</b> — though many calendars run through Christmas Day.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-E1hOOJsbYEg/X8adsO770uI/AAAAAAAA3PQ/TM3imdx87UUsCH_LH39S5pOKkQ9Sq7moACLcBGAsYHQ/s1024/adventcalendar1.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="768" data-original-width="1024" height="480" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-E1hOOJsbYEg/X8adsO770uI/AAAAAAAA3PQ/TM3imdx87UUsCH_LH39S5pOKkQ9Sq7moACLcBGAsYHQ/w640-h480/adventcalendar1.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">The reason for the shifting start date is somewhat straightforward: as celebrated by Christian churches in the Western tradition (as opposed to Eastern Orthodox churches, which keep a different calendar), <b>the season of Advent begins on the fourth Sunday before Christmas</b> and is celebrated on each successive Sunday leading up to Christmas.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">Once Advent finishes, <b>the 12 days of Christmas start... It is the period that in Christian theology marks the span between the birth of Christ and the coming of the Magi, the three wise men.</b> It begins on December 25 (Christmas) and runs through January 6th (the Epiphany, sometimes also called Three Kings' Day).</div><span><a name='more'></a></span><p style="text-align: center;"><iframe allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture" allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/rWvRU2Y7iVI" width="560"></iframe></p><div style="text-align: justify;"><b>There are always four Sundays during Advent prior to Christmas,</b> but Christmas could be any day of the week — which means the distance between the fourth Sunday of Advent and Christmas Day varies. So the length of the season shifts from year to year: In 2016, Christmas fell on a Sunday, which means the season stretched over a total of 28 days. In 2019, it was 24 days long. In 2020, it’s 26 days long.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><b>Advent calendars, </b>though, are more consistent. <b>They’re all set up for a 24 or 25-day season,</b> beginning December 1st and ending on Christmas Eve or, sometimes, Christmas Day. The reason for this is practical: since the length of the Advent season changes from year to year, it’s easier to pick a fixed number of days for a calendar that can be reproduced or reused every season. And Advent calendars are reused all the time.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-eT6Jnu8AXKg/X8ac7qLn_xI/AAAAAAAA3PE/z20chZXJQlcoson8mP3vE9M6WmaE_crYACLcBGAsYHQ/s722/adventcalendar2.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="506" data-original-width="722" height="448" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-eT6Jnu8AXKg/X8ac7qLn_xI/AAAAAAAA3PE/z20chZXJQlcoson8mP3vE9M6WmaE_crYACLcBGAsYHQ/w640-h448/adventcalendar2.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><b>On each of the four Sundays of Advent, the corresponding number of candles are lit: one on the first Sunday, two on the second, and so on.</b> If there’s a rose candle (which is meant to symbolize joy), it’s lit on the third Sunday, which is around the midpoint of Advent, a time to celebrate that the waiting is nearing its close.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">As with pretty much every Christmas custom, though, Advent doesn’t just belong to Christians who celebrate it — it has expanded to include everyone who takes part in the holiday, whatever meaning they take from it. <b>Every Advent observance, regardless of whether it includes a religious element, touches on a need to have a bit of beauty each day during the season. And it’s all in anticipation of future joy.</b></div><p style="text-align: center;">No copyright infringement intended. It’s also an opportunity to recognize men who don’t fall into traditional manifestations of masculinity,</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">It’s generally accepted that men can find it more difficult than women to address issues relating to their physical or mental wellbeing and are less likely to seek help. But the new Celta anthem is far from the Three Lions template of big choruses and simple singalongs. <b>The song is the result of intense research and modern pop nous, fusing tradition and modernity to create what might be the most artistically ambitious football anthem ever.</b></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">Tangana, real name Antón Álvarez Alfaro, doesn’t actually sing on it, ceding the spotlight to Vigo’s <i>Coral Casablanca choir,</i> tambourine-wielding female vocal group<i> Lagharteiras</i> and Celta supporters’ club <i>Tropas de Breogán.</i> What’s more, <b>the song leans heavily on the folklore of Galicia,</b> the north-western region of Spain where Vigo is located. <b>The song is in Galician</b> – its title loosely translates as “100-year-old olive tree” – <b>and uses the traditional rhythms and lyrics of Galician folk music. </b>The song’s video, meanwhile, highlights the landscape of the Vigo estuary, including the island of San Simón and the Rande Bridge.</div><p style="text-align: center;"><iframe allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share" allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/d_6f0JQOfM8" title="YouTube video player" width="560"></iframe></p><div style="text-align: justify;">Tangana says he saw the song as an opportunity to create something that could transcend popular culture. “What cultural objects can you create that will change – or endure in – our culture?” he asks. “Although this is something local, around a city, that feeling of belonging to the club and the institution it represents, makes it a really strong opportunity for you to influence a lot of people.”</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">The origins of Celta’s new anthem – a <i>himno </i>in Spanish – were simple. In 2021 Celta used Twitter to ask supporters if anyone would like to compose a new anthem to celebrate the team’s 2023 centennial. Tangana, born in <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/weather/madrid">Madrid</a> to a Celta-supporting Galician father and Andalusian mother, replied and the wheels were put in motion.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">Composing the new anthem, however, was far from straightforward. <b>Before putting pen to paper, Tangana carried out research with important figures in Galician culture, including writer Pedro Feijoo and folk musicians Rodrigo Romaní and Alfredo Dourado. </b>Tangana says that the opportunity to immerse himself in Galician folklore “was like a gift to myself as an artist”.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><b>“It is an anthem for a centennial,”</b> he says. “Each element has to have the same weight: a centennial weight.”</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">From the various traditional ideas incorporated into the song, <b>Tangana highlights the importance of the <i>pandeireteiras </i>and <i>cantareiras </i></b>(both groups of female singers, with the former, such as <i>Lagharteiras</i>, using tambourines). “This combination of female voices, always in a choir, almost never as soloists, playing percussion, all together, for me is the most moving thing there is musically in the whole world,” he says.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">He himself is not fluent in Galician and writing a song in the language was a challenge. But he says it was important to stretch himself. <b>“In the globalised world in which we live, with this obsession that everyone has to be the same, express ourselves in the same ways, make the same gestures […] cultural expressions that are very local for me have great value,” he says.</b></div><br /><div style="text-align: justify;">Tangana’s decision to write an anthem for <b>RC Celta de Vigo </b>initially caused confusion in Spain, with the artist closely linked to Madrid – El Madrileño translates as “the man from Madrid” – but the club’s fans were won round after the rapper explained his links to the club. What’s more, <b>Tangana says he sees writing <i>Oliveira Dos Cen Anos</i> as part of the same process of fusing folk culture with modern production that he explored on El Madrileño,</b> where flamenco music met Latin folk, rock, hip-hop and R&B, and on his hugely successful <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SW6L_lTrIFg">2021 Tiny Desk performance for National Public Radio in the US</a>, where he was joined by family members and musical collaborators for a performance that buzzed with the raw energy of a flamenco show.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">“When I started to do international tours, spending a lot of time in the US and Latin America, I started to realise that <b>I was missing something,”</b> he says. “That made me turn towards the culture of Spain, towards cultural elements that had shaped my childhood and adolescence, and that I had given up on <b>because I was looking at a screen or listening to music that came from other places.”</b></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><b><br /></b></div><div style="text-align: center;"><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh5YmEJbKTXxTvv9s50uPftA2v50fWoUnC0Ea4mJUuOdqPyNtFio_0ogZOrJihTE_6IlQihMSKNLd_DCUHjLS4wKM7GSCoXGzmo7LYsA83hx4OHoQrZjQM-k75paBpxS9iC3kv8vjXjcIp6Yn02T4iVVtMSibQndEQsBhWZo8CCBXfJbco1kR-96lCOXVY/s843/AsLagharteiras.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="531" data-original-width="843" height="405" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh5YmEJbKTXxTvv9s50uPftA2v50fWoUnC0Ea4mJUuOdqPyNtFio_0ogZOrJihTE_6IlQihMSKNLd_DCUHjLS4wKM7GSCoXGzmo7LYsA83hx4OHoQrZjQM-k75paBpxS9iC3kv8vjXjcIp6Yn02T4iVVtMSibQndEQsBhWZo8CCBXfJbco1kR-96lCOXVY/w640-h405/AsLagharteiras.png" width="640" /></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><span style="text-align: start;"><i>Galician vocal group </i>Lagharteiras<i>, who feature on </i><b>Oliveira Dos Cen Anos.<br /></b><i>Photograph: </i>Rocío Aguirre</span></td></tr></tbody></table></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">In this, Tangana’s music is part of a wider trend in Spanish culture, where musicians are combining elements of musical folklore – from Rosalía’s use of the flamenco palmas to Maria Arnal i Marcel Bagés’ take on Catalan folk – with 21st-century production. “The music I listened to as a child, the records that my parents liked and my family listened to, who was singing at a <i>fiesta</i>, what you eat in a normal day in Spain, where you hang out, the way you interact with alcohol, parties, family, all that helped to shape <i>El Madrileño,”</i> Tangana says. “Finally I feel like I have an artistic identity that is related to me.”</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><b><i>Oliveira Dos Cen Anos</i></b> is also firmly in the Spanish football tradition, whereby clubs commission local musicians to create bespoke anthems – such as FC Barcelona’s Cant del Barça – which are then taken up by fans.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><b><br /></b></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><b>Tangana says it is for RC Celta supporters to decide whether they want to sing <i>Oliveira Dos Cen Anos</i> on the terraces but the response so far has been very warm. And if they do sing his song when the first game of the new season kicks off in August? “I am a bit nervous,” Tangana says with a smile. “But to hear it in the stadium, in front of so many people, will be incredibly powerful.”</b></div><p style="text-align: center;">No copyright infringement intended. But it´s also a sad day, sad because we are leaving a place we all have shared for the last 13 years.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">First, I want to say sorry because, as you can see, I´m nervous and I´ll probably make some mistakes. Well, you know what? I don’t care because that’s life, <b>life is made up of mistakes. I’m sure that none of you is where you are thanks to making no mistakes, I’m completely sure that all of you are where you are thanks to loads of mistakes.</b></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">I still remember when I was a child and wanted to grow up, because when you’re a child, growing up is the most exciting thing in life and you just want to grow. Now that I´m not that young, I´ve realized that growing up is not as exciting as it was and that<b> we must stop thinking about tomorrow and start thinking about today.</b> We must enjoy this time of our lives because the teens are the best years in life. I’m sure that your best anecdotes are from your adolescence and that, if you could, you’d give anything to get back to your teens, even only for one day.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">Putting memories aside, <b>I would like to say thanks, obviously, to my mother and my father. </b>They´ve raised me to be a good person and have always helped me always with any problem. To my brother and my sister. They are everything for me, they have always been there when I needed them. I’d also like to thank all my friends; in part, this wouldn’t be possible without them. I’d love to thank them individually, but that would take all day.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><b>I’d also like to thank some teachers: </b>Álvaro, thanks for teaching us the importance of English and that we have to translate ideas, not words. Javi, thanks for those whole classes talking about the bitcoin. Pilar, thanks for teaching us History and for those classes telling you our anecdotes. Manolo, thanks for teaching us Physics and Chemistry and that when being clean and organised you´re half way to pass. Leo, thanks for 2 teaching us Technology, Technical drawing, etc. And why Microsoft Word 2003 is the best one in life. Of course, Marta and Hugo, because even though we haven´t known you for a long time, it looks like we do. In general, I’d like to thank you all for being so patient with us in these 13 years here and for being, instead of our teachers, our friends. </div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">But let´s stop talking about the past, let’s talk about the future. Well, I don’t really know what to say about the future, because I don’t know what I want. I thought that I knew, but I was wrong, but that´s OK, <b>life is made up of mistakes. It doesn’t really matter if you fail, nobody is going to remember your mistakes in the future, so fail once, twice, no matter how many times, just fail. You learn more from mistakes than from success.</b></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">I don’t like to say this, but this is probably our last day together, in this amazing school, so I can only wish you one thing, good luck in life my friends, I’m sure life will smile at you.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">But don’t get sad, as I’ve said before, we have to live the present, so please enjoy the snacks and drinks served on the schoolyard.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">Thank you so much for being here today. So long.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;">No copyright infringement intended. April Fools' Day or All Fools' Day is a day celebrated in many countries on April 1st. The day is named for the custom of playing practical jokes and hoaxes of varying sophistication on friends, family members, enemies, and neighbours, or sending them on a fool's errand, the aim of which is to embarrass the gullible. Traditionally, in some countries, such as the UK, Australia and South Africa the jokes only last until noon, and someone who plays a trick after noon is called an "April Fool". Elsewhere, such as in Canada, France, Ireland, Italy, Russia, The Netherlands, and the U.S., the jokes last all day.<br />
<a name='more'></a></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Though it has been observed for centuries in several countries, including France and Britain, its origin is unknown. It resembles the Hilaria festival of ancient Rome (March 25th) and the Holi festival of India (ending March 31st). The custom of playing April Fools' jokes was brought to America by the British.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_w0JVhtUvRSc/SzZ2khv2GkI/AAAAAAAAEcY/IoLnwi5dp4I/s800/fools_day.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/_w0JVhtUvRSc/SzZ2khv2GkI/AAAAAAAAEcY/IoLnwi5dp4I/s800/fools_day.jpg" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div>
In Spain and Ibero-America, an equivalent date is December 28th, Christian day of celebration of the Massacre of the Innocents. The Christian celebration is a holiday in its own right, a religious one, but the tradition of pranks not, though the latter is observed yearly. After somebody plays a joke or a prank (such as sticking paper cut-outs of little men, or Monigotes to people’s backs) on somebody else, the joker usually cries out, as a popular expression, "¡Inocente!" (Innocent!).<br />
<br />
Now, let's see a real example of a prank:<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
This professor has a policy in his classroom where if someone’s phone rings in the middle of class, they have to answer it and put it on speaker ... this is hilarious.</div>

Daylight saving time (DST)—also summer time in several countries, in British English, and European official terminology—is the practice of advancing clocks so that evenings have more daylight and mornings have less. Typically clocks are adjusted forward one hour near the start of spring and are adjusted backward in autumn.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="text-align: justify;"></span><br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/4/44/Begin_CEST_Transparent.png" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="200" src="https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/4/44/Begin_CEST_Transparent.png" width="200" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span face="sans-serif" style="background-color: #f9f9f9; font-size: 11px; line-height: 15px; text-align: left;">When DST starts in central Europe</span><span face="sans-serif" style="background-color: #f9f9f9; font-size: 11px; line-height: 15px; text-align: left;">, clocks advance from 02:00 CET</span><span face="sans-serif" style="background-color: #f9f9f9; font-size: 11px; line-height: 15px; text-align: left;"> to 03:00 CEST</span><span face="sans-serif" style="background-color: #f9f9f9; font-size: 11px; line-height: 15px; text-align: left;">.</span> </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Though mentioned by Benjamin Franklin in 1784, the modern idea of daylight saving was first proposed in 1895 by and it was first implemented during the First World War. Many countries have used it at various times since then.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br />
<a name='more'></a></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The practice has been both praised and <a href="http://www.farodevigo.es/sociedad-cultura/2012/03/19/error-horario-dura-72-anos/633531.html" target="_blank">criticized</a>. Adding daylight to evenings benefits retailing, sports, and other activities that exploit sunlight after working hours but can cause problems for evening entertainment and other occupations tied to the sun. Its effect on health and crime is less clear. Although an early goal of DST was to reduce evening usage of incandescent lighting, formerly a primary use of electricity, modern heating and cooling usage patterns differ greatly, and research about how DST currently affects energy use is limited or contradictory.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
DST clock shifts present other challenges. They complicate timekeeping, and can disrupt meetings, travel, billing, recordkeeping, medical devices, heavy equipment, and sleep patterns. Software can often adjust computer clocks automatically, but this can be limited and error-prone, particularly when DST protocols are changed.</div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
In a typical case where a one-hour shift occurs at 02:00 local time, in spring the clock jumps forward from the last moment of 01:59 standard time to 03:00 DST and that day has 23 hours, whereas in autumn the clock jumps backward from the last moment of 02:59 DST to 02:00 standard time, repeating that hour, and that day has 25 hours. A digital display of local time does not read 02:00 exactly at the shift to summertime, but instead jumps from 01:59:59.9 forward to 03:00:00</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/9/9a/Daylightsavings.svg/170px-Daylightsavings.svg.png" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/9/9a/Daylightsavings.svg/170px-Daylightsavings.svg.png" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
In Europe clock shifts are usually scheduled on the last weekend of March and the last weekend in October to lessen disruption to weekday schedules. A one-hour shift is customary.</div>

St. Patrick's Day is a global celebration of Irish culture on or around 17th March. It particularly remembers St Patrick, one of Ireland's patron saints, who ministered Christianity in Ireland during the fifth century. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
St. Patrick's Day is celebrated in many parts of the world, especially by Irish communities and organizations. Many people wear an item of green clothing on the day. Parties featuring Irish food and drinks that are dyed in green food colour are part of this celebration.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
It is a time when children can indulge in sweets and adults can enjoy a "pint" of beer at a local pub. Many restaurants and pubs offer Irish food or drink.</div>

The striker and the club have found a young successor</b></div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">In the land of Iago Aspas, maybe one day Gabri Veiga will write his own story. Still only 20 and a journalism student, it started with him kicking a pumpkin around his uncle’s place in the Galician countryside. Where it goes, who knows yet, but it’s going to be somewhere good: named the best player in <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/football/laligafootball">La Liga</a> for February, a likely call-up for Spain this Friday, and scorer of eight (mostly absurd) goals this season.</div><br /><div style="text-align: justify;">The one against Betis was ridiculous and some even have dared claim the <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/football/celtavigo">Celta Vigo</a> midfielder will end up like Aspas, his captain. Only, Veiga insists, there’s no one like him – and he knows, he’s seen it.</div><br /><div style="text-align: justify;">Born in O Porriño, Pontevedra province, Veiga was six on the day Aspas made his debut for Celta, the team they both supported a generation apart. He watched him rescue them from <a href="https://www.espn.co.uk/football/blog/espn-fc-united/68/post/2630720/iago-aspas-the-talisman-of-celta-vigo">sliding into the third tier</a>. Aspas left the same year Veiga arrived, aged 11, and saw the forward come back again, just happy to be home. Veiga saw him score more La Liga goals than any other Spaniard, in four seasons. Now he’s seeing it from up close.</div><span><a name='more'></a></span><div style="text-align: justify;">The first time Veiga played for Celta’s first team in a 2-1 win against Valencia in September 2020, Aspas scored twice. The last time, in a 3-0 win over Rayo on Saturday, he saw Aspas score twice more. . “Iago is the best player in the club’s history,” Veiga says.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">After the game, it was suggested to the Celta captain that one day the ground may be named after him. It won’t happen; let’s face it – it’s far more likely to be a bookies or a bank – but it would be right. Aspas is closing in on 200 goals for Celta, more than anyone else, and he has become probably the single most important player in Spain for his team,.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">Aspas was, it sometimes seemed, their one, all, and everything, <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/football/blog/2013/jun/03/celta-vigo-la-liga-relegation">single-handedly saving them</a>. Alone no more, he was also asked about Veiga, the kid emerging as his successor. “I hope he can be here with us for many years, so that we can enjoy him,” Aspas said.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">This is where the word of warning always goes; the small print, the bit where you’re reminded that the value of your investment – emotional, financial – can go up as well as down. So many players were going to be big, built up before their time and beyond their means or found circumstance conspiring against them. Being the new someone too often means not being yourself, weighed down by someone else’s expectations. As Bojan Krkic rightly puts it, his career <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/football/2018/may/18/bojan-krkic-interview-anxiety-attacks-football">was not without his success</a>, it just wasn’t Messi’s.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjLLRhb9gz106I4xqmXIONakODUBxen1XlpkD44gTpHsUpCt_Y3vVEx1s7gU6PMFOfw020HSumkoY-u6bQ4gLHVxOAlXUTmqf_WxUndV7TJab4tyquYg2Vr0ukuvsvaB-7kB6zNXjk79RdzHzH8LIXxUKiU7DPjEGAnVoo7E5R_nw3bGlrSVVk138iH/s880/gveiga001.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="528" data-original-width="880" height="384" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjLLRhb9gz106I4xqmXIONakODUBxen1XlpkD44gTpHsUpCt_Y3vVEx1s7gU6PMFOfw020HSumkoY-u6bQ4gLHVxOAlXUTmqf_WxUndV7TJab4tyquYg2Vr0ukuvsvaB-7kB6zNXjk79RdzHzH8LIXxUKiU7DPjEGAnVoo7E5R_nw3bGlrSVVk138iH/w640-h384/gveiga001.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">Before Barcelona took it mainstream, Real Madrid had a palanca of their own. Lots of people lost their minds over a kid called Miguel, who made his debut in the clásico, only to play two more games. Even Ansu Fati, touched by <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/football/2019/sep/16/a-star-is-born-ansu-fati-announces-himself-and-changes-his-world-barcelona-la-liga">something intangible</a>, looks oddly mortal now.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">And yet, and yet. Previously unmoved by the ball, there was something about the pumpkin that drew him in, Veiga admits. That’s how it began. Although he didn’t stand out especially at youth level, he was the player that most caught the eye in an extremely talented Celta B team, and after that first-team debut in 2020, he made a handful of appearances.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">This season, Veiga has become virtually ever-present. He has needed to be: Brais Méndez was sold to Real Sociedad last summer, Santi Mina was moved on and Denis Suárez was frozen out over his refusal to ditch his agents, who had taken one of Celta’s youth prospects to Madrid, with Aspas saying even then that the squad was short.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">Veiga has been extraordinary, the comparisons inevitable. His eruption, says the club’s academy director, is “even greater than Iago’s”. His calling is to be the substitute to Aspas,” says Hugo Mallo, who made his 300th appearance on Saturday and, <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/football/blog/2013/mar/18/celta-vigo-deportivo-la-coruna-mallo-aspas">you may remember</a>, is not just a teammate but a member of the Iago Aspas Supporters Club. Veiga has said he would love to follow in the path of those two men, but inevitably, suitors have surfaced. “He’s like me: he’s from here, he has family here,” Aspas says. “I left and it didn’t work. He has desire, enthusiasm, quality. He’s comfortable here and hope he stays for a long time. If he has to go, let it be leaving behind many millions.”</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">Carlos Carvalhal, the coach, said: “He has been a surprise. I have seen very few players like him in my career.” And he’s been at Sheffield Wednesday.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">Celta have improved dramatically under Carvalhal: from three wins and eight defeats in 13 games to five wins and two defeats in the 12 since he took over. In the relegation zone when he took over, they now sit 11th, five points and seven places clear. They’ve lost one in seven – 1-0 against Atlético – and in that time have scored four against Betis, three against Valladolid and Rayo.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">Defensively they have tightened up, no goals conceded in 334 minutes, the structure has improved and the attitude has too. “We’re going to have to squeeze one bollock next to the other,” Aspas said, which they did, figuratively at least.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgcbcaVZM2zHNnvvtWRx3MAgBFNOPhPXHxNx64Deo4KzGxm2CUYa2GB0vApp5enJG6ySLtVcGUx2OQHQxHy5qv6fIVIZXF2HkrXvDPEel1jxa2w17Xfbp1eJFAl3iGQ8PcF2CD-SM4FXpycF0wpk61oQYpLN2sXF8DBdZCUrJMwbjlHRI4CeaaqacC6/s620/gveiga001.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="402" data-original-width="620" height="414" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgcbcaVZM2zHNnvvtWRx3MAgBFNOPhPXHxNx64Deo4KzGxm2CUYa2GB0vApp5enJG6ySLtVcGUx2OQHQxHy5qv6fIVIZXF2HkrXvDPEel1jxa2w17Xfbp1eJFAl3iGQ8PcF2CD-SM4FXpycF0wpk61oQYpLN2sXF8DBdZCUrJMwbjlHRI4CeaaqacC6/w640-h414/gveiga001.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">It has been collective, but Veiga has been at the heart of the improvement, scoring two against Betis and Valladolid, taking him to eight goals. No one in the squad has more than two, except Aspas. Among La Liga’s Spaniards, only Joselu, <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/football/2023/mar/09/real-betis-borja-iglesias-interview-manchester-united-europa-league">Borja Iglesias</a>, Aspas and Álvaro Morata have more. Four of those five were in the youth system at Celta. The only one of the five who is not a forward is Veiga.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">He is not the stereotypical Spanish midfielder. Strong and athletic, technically impressive, his position better defined under Carvalhal, Veiga is playing a little deeper than he was, from where he can spring at opponents. From where, too, he can provide: there are three assists to go with the goals.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">“He doesn’t have that profile of touch or precision, but he knows how to play. He’s intelligent, very strong, and he can get into area to finish,” Rayo’s manager, Andoni Iraola, said before Saturday’s game. “He carries the ball, cleans players out and does a lot of damage”.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">Within 34 seconds, Veiga had done exactly that. Named La Liga’s best player for February, he had barely put the award down when he set off from the halfway line, pulling away from Rayo’s players, a touch of Gazza about him. Reaching the area, he provided the perfect pass for Aspas.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">There was something of the importance of timing in that. The timing on the pitch, but also the moment when he has become a key part of the team, accompanying Aspas. It can feel like a pity they will probably have only a couple of years together, but at other stages of Aspas’s career maybe it would have been a harder fit. Now, aged 35 and 20 respectively, it feels perfect, the transition smoothed, some of the load shared.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">Aspas came into the game without a goal in five weeks and missed that chance, when he should have scored. Veiga almost scored another with a neat curler that was pushed away from the near post. Four minutes had gone and the 20-year-old was striding across the game, like a Celtic colossus.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiAEnSC3zhA5YRoS9TniZ_8xIjqMuv9OthSCR46CwGRMdDGgOzqUnk5oKBJ5dmOWnEZwUgiPGiPOpvzVqXCZFsBG-i_G9MGVF0lMTC-ftxmEI6y_j5szEzJaJIJTsKzdze9dXNM3T2YtpZmY1XcQx90KxTWL08KS1O5v25rrUh6Vh8aKWLM9jN7cbq0/s475/gveiga001.jpg" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="475" data-original-width="380" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiAEnSC3zhA5YRoS9TniZ_8xIjqMuv9OthSCR46CwGRMdDGgOzqUnk5oKBJ5dmOWnEZwUgiPGiPOpvzVqXCZFsBG-i_G9MGVF0lMTC-ftxmEI6y_j5szEzJaJIJTsKzdze9dXNM3T2YtpZmY1XcQx90KxTWL08KS1O5v25rrUh6Vh8aKWLM9jN7cbq0/w320-h400/gveiga001.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>Yet when it came to it, like so many other times, the giant was Aspas. He swept in Celta’s first, struck again on 51 minutes and then completed the scoring with a glorious third at the end, lifting the ball over Rayo’s Stole Dimitrievski from a tight angle.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">In the week when the Spain squad is named, it a timely reminder, a reassertion of Aspas’s status. It took him to double figures for the eighth consecutive season. It also took Celta to what looks like safety and that’s no minor thing: they have been a first division team for a decade, his decade, which only eight other clubs can say. “Aspas guides the ship to shore,” wrote Faro de Vigo. “Celta hit terra firma after months of torturous sailing.”</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">Aspas is, Faro de Vigo said, “magic,” a man whose “talent is inversely proportionate to the recognition he gets beyond Piornedo [on the Galician border].” AS declared: “Aspas is Captain Lightning.” “A genius,” Marca called him, insisting: “that Aspas is a genius, one of the best players in the league, seems obvious but you have to say it more because we have been unjust to the man from Moaña.”</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">‘“He is the best player I have had the pleasure of coaching,” added Carvalhal. “When you have a player like Aspas, it makes everything easier.”</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">Fifteen years his junior, Veiga said that one day he would tell his children he played with Aspas. Aspas needn’t do the same: his kids can see that for themselves.</div><p style="text-align: center;">No copyright infringement intended. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-SIY_tgeR9Tw/Wq12LDvy_sI/AAAAAAAAvRI/mOrWUOAd5hwS_x8AVYdl3u6pXgpnu6NIQCLcBGAs/s1600/graduationspeech.png" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="242" data-original-width="652" height="236" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-SIY_tgeR9Tw/Wq12LDvy_sI/AAAAAAAAvRI/mOrWUOAd5hwS_x8AVYdl3u6pXgpnu6NIQCLcBGAs/s640/graduationspeech.png" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
ESO 4 Students,</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
This is your PBL assignment for the 3rd term. All of you have to WRITE and DELIVER your GRADUATION SPEECH. You have to imagine you are going to stand in the school Assembly Hall before your teachers, classmates, parents and guests at your ESO graduation ceremony (to be held, if COVID-19 protective measures permit it, on a date yet to be determined) and deliver your speech, which must be <b>at least 350 WORDS LONG.</b></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The best student will be offered the chance to deliver his or her speech at your graduation ceremony... in English!! Of course, he or she will get extra points in the final mark for that effort.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br />
<a name='more'></a></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px; margin: 0px;">
</div>
<div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px; margin: 0px;">
<br /></div>
</div>
</div>
<div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px; margin: 0px;">
<b>IMPORTANT:</b> You must follow the same formatting rules as for the rest of school projects: The font must be 'Century Gothic', size 12; 1.5 line spacing, justified text, page numbers at the bottom centre of each page.</div>
</div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
This is your work <b>schedule:</b></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
</div>
<ul>
<li style="text-align: justify;"><b>Monday 20th March -</b> Print this post at home and bring it to school. Students who fail to bring this post to class from that day on will be deducted 1 point in their PBL mark for every single day they fail to produce this post.</li>
<li style="text-align: justify;"><b>Monday 17th April and Friday 21st April -</b> Print this post at home IN ENGLISH and bring a <b>HANDWRITTEN </b>translation into Spanish or Galician to school to start working on it. <b>Do not use an automatic translator or any other app to do the translation: you have to do it yourselves.</b><span style="text-align: justify;"> Each student MUST bring their own dictionary to class for those 2 sessions (electronic dictionaries, laptops, etc. are allowed; mobile phones, iphones or blackberries are not) in order to start writing and practising your speech. It is also a good idea to print and bring to class some or all of the information contained in the links at the end of this post as well as any other information or help you may find useful.</span></li>
<li style="text-align: justify;"><b>Before 23:59:59 on Friday 12th May</b> your speech AND your reading notes or checklist (see NB# 3 below) in one (and only one) PDF file have to reach our <a href="mailto:alvaro.deprado@colegiolabor.com" target="_blank">e-mail</a>. Your file name MUST be as follows:</li>
</ul>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Class_Number_Name_1stSurname.pdf - Example: 4A_1_Brais_Carballo.pdf</div>
</div>
<ul>
<li style="text-align: justify;"><b>Monday 22nd May to Monday 29th June -</b> You will have to stand before your class and deliver your speeches.</li>
</ul>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Points will be deducted for every instruction you do not follow.<br />
<br />
<b>NB #1: STUDENTS WHO REFUSE TO DELIVER THEIR GRADUATION SPEECH WILL BE GRADED 0 POINTS, WHICH WILL BE PART OF YOUR 3RD TERM AVERAGE MARK JUST AS ANY OTHER TEST OR EXAM.</b><br />
<b><br /></b>
<b>NB #2: You CANNOT READ your speech; you must DELIVER IT BY HEART (students who do this will get 5 points or more).</b><br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<b>1. Introduction (Present)</b></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
1.1 Greet the audience.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
1.2 Thank them for coming.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
1.3 Make some remarks about your feelings and how excited you are to be graduating.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
1.4 Present an idea or motto connected with the school, education, life, etc.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<b>2. About You (Past)</b></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
2.1 Tell a few short, important or funny childhood stories or anecdotes about yourselves.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
2.2 Talk about your role model(s) and how they influenced your life.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
2.3 Tell how you could "not have got where you are without ____".</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<b>3. Thank You (Past)</b></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
3.1 Say you would like to thank a few people specifically for all of their help:</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
3.1.2 Thank your mother, your father and family... maybe some friends...</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
3.1.3 Thank and acknowledge whatever mentor or teacher influenced you the most (in a good way).</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
3.1.4 Acknowledge your classmates' influence on you or even congratulate other students' for their performance/behaviour/personality.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<b>4. Conclusion (Future)</b></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
4.1 Tell the audience about your expectations for the future.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
4.2 Go back to your introduction and repeat your initial idea or motto.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
4.3 Wish your classmates a happy and safe end-of-school trip.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
4.4 Express your good wishes for everybody's future... and especially your classmates'.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
4.5 Tell everyone to enjoy the snacks and drinks served on the schoolyard.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
4.6 Thank everybody once again for being there and for their attention.</div>

<b><span style="font-size: large;">Carnival</span></b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Carnival is a festive season which occurs immediately before Lent; the main events are usually during February. Carnival typically involves a public celebration or parade combining some elements of a circus, masque and public street party. People often dress up or masquerade during the celebrations, which mark an overturning of daily life.<br />
<br />
<a name='more'></a></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Carnival is a festival traditionally held in Roman Catholic and, to a lesser extent, Eastern Orthodox societies. Protestant areas usually do not have carnival celebrations or have modified traditions, such as the Danish Carnival or other Shrove Tuesday events. The Brazilian Carnaval is one of the best-known celebrations today, but many cities and regions worldwide celebrate with large, popular, and days-long events, such as in <a href="http://www.farodevigo.es/sociedad-cultura/2010/02/15/laza-vive-dia-grande-entroido--farrapada/411833.html">Laza</a>, Verín, or Xinzo de Limia, which boasts the longest carnival in Spain.<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The traditional English carnivals take place later in the year, such as the Notting Hill Carnival, an annual event which since 1966 has taken place on the streets of Notting Hill, London, UK each August, over two days. It is led by members of the Trinidad and Tobago Caribbean population, many of whom have lived in the area since the 1950s. </div>
</div>
</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/5/51/Notting_Hill_Carnival_2002_large.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="256" src="https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/5/51/Notting_Hill_Carnival_2002_large.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<b><br />
</b></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<b>Lent</b></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Lent is the period of 40 days which comes before Easter in the Christian calendar. Beginning on Ash Wednesday (next Wednesday February 17th), Lent is a season of reflection and preparation before the celebrations of Easter. By observing the 40 days of Lent, Christians replicate Jesus Christ's sacrifice and withdrawal into the desert for 40 days. Lent is marked by fasting, both from food and festivities.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Whereas Easter celebrates the resurrection of Jesus after his death on the cross, Lent recalls the events leading up to and including Jesus' crucifixion by Rome. This is believed to have taken place in Roman occupied Jerusalem.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The Christian churches that observe Lent in the 21st century (and not all do significantly) use it as a time for prayer and penance. Only a small number of people today fast for the whole of Lent, although some maintain the practice on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. It is more common these days for believers to surrender a particular vice such as favourite foods or smoking. Whatever the sacrifice it is a reflection of Jesus' deprivation in the wilderness and a test of self-discipline.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<b>Why 40 days?</b></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<a href="http://psicologiacine.blogspot.com/2010/02/40.html">40</a> is a significant number in Jewish-Christian scripture:</div>
<ul>
<li style="text-align: justify;">In Genesis, the flood which destroyed the earth was brought about by 40 days and nights of rain.</li>
<li style="text-align: justify;">The Hebrews spent 40 years in the wilderness before reaching the land promised to them by God.</li>
<li style="text-align: justify;">Moses fasted for 40 days before receiving the ten commandments on Mount Sinai.</li>
<li style="text-align: justify;">Jesus spent 40 days fasting in the wilderness in preparation for his ministry.</li>
</ul>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Most Christians regard Jesus' time in the wilderness as the key event for the duration of Lent.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<b>Why is it called Lent?</b></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Lent is an old English word meaning 'lengthen'. Lent is observed in spring, when the days begin to get longer.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The colour purple</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Purple is the symbolic colour used in throughout Lent, for drapes and altar frontals.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Purple is used for two reasons: firstly because it is associated with mourning and so anticipates the pain and suffering of the crucifixion, and secondly because purple is the colour associated with royalty, and celebrates Christ's resurrection and sovereignty.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<b>Shrove Tuesday </b></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
(Tuesday February 16th)</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Shrove Tuesday is the day before Lent starts: the Tuesday before Ash Wednesday. It's a day of penitence, to clean the soul, and a day of celebration as the last chance to feast before Lent begins.</div>
<div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The word shrove is the past tense of the English verb shrive, which means to obtain absolution for one's sins by way of confession and doing penance</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<a href="http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/2/29/Heap_of_pancakes_in_Sweden.JPG/796px-Heap_of_pancakes_in_Sweden.JPG" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/2/29/Heap_of_pancakes_in_Sweden.JPG/796px-Heap_of_pancakes_in_Sweden.JPG" width="320" /></a>Shrove Tuesday is sometimes called Pancake Day after the fried batter recipe traditionally eaten on this day.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
But there's more to Shrove Tuesday than pigging out on pancakes or taking part in a public pancake race. The pancakes themselves are part of an ancient custom with deeply religious roots.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<b>Penitence</b></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
When a person receives absolution for their sins, they are forgiven for them and released from the guilt and pain that they have caused them.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<b>Shrove Tuesday celebrations</b></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Shrove Tuesday is a day of celebration as well as penitence, because it's the last day before Lent.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Lent is a time of abstinence, of giving things up. So Shrove Tuesday is the last chance to indulge yourself, and to use up the foods that aren't allowed in Lent.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<b>Giving up foods: but not wasting them</b></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
During Lent there are many foods that some Christians - historically and today - would not eat: foods such as meat and fish, fats, eggs, and milky foods.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
So that no food was wasted, families would have a feast on the shriving Tuesday, and eat up all the foods that wouldn't last the forty days of Lent without going off.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The need to eat up the fats gave rise to the French name Mardi Gras ('fat Tuesday'). Pancakes became associated with Shrove Tuesday as they were a dish that could use up all the eggs, fats and milk in the house with just the addition of flour.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<b>The origin of pancake racing</b></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Pancake races are thought to have begun in 1445. A woman had lost track of the time on Shrove Tuesday, and was busy cooking pancakes in her kitchen.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Suddenly she heard the church bell ringing to call the faithful to church for confession. The woman raced out of her house and ran all the way to church; still holding her frying pan and wearing her apron.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<b>Ash Wednesday</b></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Ash Wednesday is the beginning of Lent for Western Christian churches. It's a day of penitence to clean the soul before the Lent fast.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Roman Catholic, Anglican, and some other churches hold special services at which worshippers are marked with ashes as a symbol of death and sorrow for sin.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<b>Ash Wednesday services</b></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The service draws on the ancient Biblical traditions of covering one's head with ashes, wearing sackcloth, and fasting.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<b>The mark of ashes</b></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
In Ash Wednesday churchgoers are marked on the forehead with a cross of ashes as a sign of penitence and mortality. The use of ashes, made by burning palm crosses from the previous Palm Sunday, is very symbolic.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The priest marks each worshipper on the forehead, and says "remember you are dust and unto dust you shall return", or a similar phrase based on God's sentence on Adam in Genesis 3:19.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The modern practice in Roman Catholic churches nowadays, as the ashes are being administered, is for the priest to say something like "Turn away from sin and believe the gospel".</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.hollow-hill.com/sabina/images/ash-wednesday.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://www.hollow-hill.com/sabina/images/ash-wednesday.jpg" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<b>Keeping the mark</b></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
At some churches the worshippers leave with the mark still on their forehead so that they carry the sign of the cross out into the world.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<b>Symbolism of the ashes</b></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The marking of their forehead with a cross made of ashes reminds each churchgoer that:</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<ul>
<li>Death comes to everyone</li>
<li>They should be sad for their sins</li>
<li>They must change themselves for the better</li>
<li>God made the first human being by breathing life into dust, and without God, human beings are nothing more than dust and ashes.</li>
</ul>
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The shape of the mark and the words used are symbolic in other ways:</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<ul>
<li>The cross is a reminder of the mark of the cross made at baptism</li>
<li>The phrase often used when the ashes are administered reminds Christians of the doctrine of original sin</li>
<li>The cross of ashes may symbolise the way Christ's sacrifice on the cross as atonement for sin replaces the Old Testament tradition of making burnt offerings to atone for sin</li>
</ul>
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<b>Where the ashes come from</b></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The ashes used on Ash Wednesday are made by burning the palm crosses that were blessed on the previous year's Palm Sunday.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<b>Ashes and oil</b></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The ash is sometimes mixed with anointing oil, which makes sure that the ashes make a good mark. The use of anointing oil also reminds the churchgoer of God's blessings and of the anointing that took place at their baptism.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<b>From Palm Sunday to Ash Wednesday</b></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Palm Sunday celebrates Jesus's triumphant entry into Jerusalem, so when the crosses used in the Palm Sunday service are converted to ashes, the worshippers are reminded that defeat and crucifixion swiftly followed triumph.<br />
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://jameswoodward.files.wordpress.com/2009/04/india_-_palm_sunday.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="230" src="https://jameswoodward.files.wordpress.com/2009/04/india_-_palm_sunday.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
But using the ashes to mark the cross on the believer's forehead symbolises that through Christ's death and resurrection, all Christians can be free from sin.</div>

Decimal Day (15th February 1971) was the day the United Kingdom and Ireland <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Decimalisation">decimalised</a> their currencies.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2514/3972509580_57e61d412d_o.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="285" src="https://farm3.static.flickr.com/2514/3972509580_57e61d412d_o.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<b>The old system</b></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Under the old currency of <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pound_sterling">pounds</a>, <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shilling_(British_coin)">shillings</a> and <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Penny">pence</a>, the pound was made up of 240 pence (denoted by the letter d for Latin <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Denarius">denarius</a> and now referred to as "old pence"), with 12 pence in a shilling and 20 shillings (denoted by s for Latin solidus) in a pound. Especially in an era before widespread computer use, monetary calculation, such as adding up sums of money, was more complicated than with a decimal currency. Tourists were also confused by coins such as the '<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Half-crown">half-crown</a>' (worth two shillings and sixpence, or one eighth of a pound). The loss of value of the currency meant that the <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/British_one_penny_coin_(pre-decimal)">penny</a>, with the same diameter as the U.S. half dollar, was of relatively slight value (the <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Farthing_(British_coin)">farthing</a>, worth one-quarter of an old penny, had been demonetised in 1960).</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/9/92/Decimalisationdday.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="295" src="https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/9/92/Decimalisationdday.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<b>Changeover</b></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Under the new system, the pound was retained but was now divided into 100 "new pence", denoted by the symbol p. New, different coinage was issued alongside the old coins. The 5p and 10p coins were first introduced in April 1968 and were the same size, composition and value as the shillings and florins circulating alongside them. In October 1969 the 50p coin was introduced and the old ten-shilling note was eventually withdrawn, in November 1970. This reduced the number of new coins that had to be introduced on the day and meant that the public was already familiar with three of the six new coins. Small book were made available containing some or all of the new denominations.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Decimal Day itself went smoothly and did not even form the lead story the following day in most national newspapers. Criticisms included the small size of the new halfpenny coin and the fact that some traders had taken advantage of the transition to raise prices. Some used new pennies as sixpences in vending machines<span class="Apple-style-span" face="sans-serif" style="font-size: x-small;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="line-height: 19px;">.</span></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" face="sans-serif" style="font-size: x-small;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="line-height: 19px;"><br />
</span></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Now let's hope some day in the near future traffic signs and capacity measurements (for example in petrol stations) in the UK, Ireland and other English-speaking countries will also be decimalised. Shall our eyes see that change? At LEZ we are afraid we won't...</div>
