For there is the kingdom of their own company
Blessed are the superstars
For the magnificence in their light
We understand better our own insignificance
Blessed are the filthy rich
For you can only truly own what you give away
Like your pain
The Biblical verses Matthew 5:3-11, otherwise known as the Beautitudes, were a series of eight blessings recounted by Jesus on the Sermon of the Mount through the gospels of Matthew and Luke:
Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are they that mourn: for they shall be comforted. Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth. Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled. Blessed are the merciful: for they shall obtain mercy. Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God. Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God. Blessed are they which are persecuted for righteousness' sake: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are ye, when men shall revile you, and persecute you, and shall say all manner of evil against you falsely, for my sake.
Instead of blessings those that were loyal to Jesus and had good character, rapper Kendrick Lamar’s version of the Beautitudes in this U2's song looked down on individuals that only care about their self-importance. For example, he explains that the “filthy rich” are only rich due to their materialism instead of having rich morals and values. In the outro, he mainly targeted those that were consistently being documented by the media due to their popularity or those that boast about their wealth.
Noticeably, Kendrick refers to them as “blessed” since he explains that they were gifted with the stardom and wealth by God. Instead of humbling themselves and showing some importance to others, they place too much pride in their fame and continue to boast about their superiority. He referenced something similar in his 2015 track, “How Much A Dollar Cost”:
And this particular person just had it down pat
Starin' at me for the longest until he finally asked
“Have you ever opened up Exodus 14?
A humble man is all that we ever need
--------- ooo O ooo ----------
Get out of your own way, hey, hey
Get out of your own way, hey, hey
[Verse 1: Bono]
Love hurts
Now you're the girl who's left with no words
Your heart's a balloon, but then it bursts
It doesn't take a cannon, just a pin
Your skin's not covering
And resistance
Love has got to fight for its existence
The enemy has armies for assistance
The amorous, the glamorous, the kiss
A fist, listen to this, oh
[Chorus: Bono]
Get out of your own way, oh, I
Get out of your own way, oh, I
[Post-Chorus: Bono]
I could sing it to you all night, all night
If I could, I'd make it alright, alright
Nothing's stopping you except what's inside
I can help you, but it's your fight, your fight
Fight back
Don't take it lyin' down, you got to bite back
The face of liberty's starting to crack
She had a plan up until she got smacked in the mouth
And it all went south
Like freedom
The slaves are lookin' for someone to lead them
The master's lookin' for someone to need him
The promised land is there for those who need it most
And Lincoln's ghost said...
[Chorus: Bono]
Get out of your own way, oh, I
Get out of your own way, oh, I
[Post-Chorus: Bono]
I could sing it to you all night, all night
If I could, I'd make it alright, alright
Nothing's stopping you except what's inside
I can help you, but it's your fight, your fight
[Chorus: Bono]
Get out of your own way
Get out of your own way
Get out of your own way
Get out of your own way
Get out of your own way
[Outro: Kendrick Lamar]
Blessed are the arrogant
For there is the kingdom of their own company
Blessed are the superstars
For the magnificence in their light
We understand better our own insignificance
Blessed are the filthy rich
For you can only truly own what you give away
Like your pain
