ESO 1: Unit 1 revision (27th April-3rd May)

Dear ESO1 students,

From now on, we will be revising what you have learnt in units 1 through 6. We will be working on each unit on a weekly basis. After units 3 and 6, we will be using another week to do some reinforcement activities for the previous three units.

Every Monday, I will be publishing new revision tasks and the answers to the previous week activities. You must download the files I will be posting here and you will have to solve them on your computer. Then, you have to send that file back to me at labor.teacher@gmail.com.

When you sit down to work on these tasks, make sure you have your student's book on your table or desk: in order to solve them, you will need to revise the vocabulary, grammar and irregular verbs sections you will find in your workbook. All these activities are planned so that you do a little bit every weekday. Don't try and do them all in just one go!

Do not send me any photographs of your notebooks or workbooks. Just return the *.doc file to me once you have solved it. Remember to identify your file before sending it back to me.

You must identify your file as follows:

Class_Number_Name_1stSurname.doc - Example: 1A_1_Alejandra_Alcañiz.doc

The deadline will be Sunday 3rd May (as I will be publishing the answers on Monday). No files will be admitted after the deadline.

Click on the link below to download your task for week 1 (unit 1 revision; Monday 27th April - Sunday 3rd May):

The correct answers to this task will be published next Monday 4th May.

This is our schedule:

Week 1: Unit 1 revision; Monday 27th April - Sunday 3rd May
Week 2: Unit 2 revision; Monday 4th May - Sunday 10th May
Week 3: Unit 3 revision; Monday 11th May - Sunday 17th May
Week 4: Units 1-3 reinforcement; Monday 18th May - Sunday 24th May

ESO 4: Graduation Speech New Plan

ESO 4 students,

Due to the current lockdown situation, your previous graduation speech plan and schedule must be modified. This is the new plan.

You still have to write your graduation speech in English and follow the same formatting rules already stated (the font must be 'Century Gothic', size 12; 1.5 line spacing, justified text, page numbers at the bottom centre of each page.)

Before 23:59:59 on Friday 15th May your speech in a PDF file has to reach our e-mail. Your file name MUST be as follows:

Class_Number_Name_1stSurname.pdf - Example: 4A_1_Alfonso_Carballo.pdf

Then you must record a video of yourself delivering your speech (you may use a mobile phone, a camera, etc.) and upload the clip to YouTube, Google Drive, WeTransfer, etc. and send the link to me by e-mail (all you have to do is make sure you create a private channel on any of those platforms so that only you and I can have access to your videoclip and keep it completely private.)
Do not send your videos, only their link.
I must be able to watch the videos online without downloading them!!
I WILL NOT DOWNLOAD ANY VIDEOS WHATSOEVER.

The deadline is Friday 29th May at precisely 23:59:59.

Remember:

ESO 1 - Oral Presentation Assignment

Dear ESO 1 students,

After our Easter holiday break, we are back… online! Although these were atypical holidays for all of us, I hope you were able to get some fun out of it.

I will now proceed to explain the details for your next assignment:

The next task involves an oral presentation. You will have to give a speech for at least 5 minutes on a topic of your choice. You must use some visual aids, such as Power Point, Prezi, Google Docs, Adobe, or any other presentation software you feel comfortable with. Once you are done with your Power Point (or such) and you have gained enough practice on your speech, you must record yourself (you may use a mobile phone, a camera...) and send the clip to labor.teacher@gmail.com. Recordings must be sent to the aforementioned address by Sunday 26th April. Hence, you will be working on this project during two weeks, those lessons that will be missed on the 15th, 16th,17th, 22nd, 23rd and 24th April. Note that it is vital that both you and your visual aids appear on screen, as I will be assessing the following items:

- Presence: the speaker maintains good eye contact with the audience and is appropriately animated (gestures, moving around etc.).

- Language skills: correct usage of the language, appropriate vocabulary and grammar, fluency and clear, audible voice.

- Organization: clear logical structure.

- Mastery of the subject:  the student is familiar with the contents, the presentation contains accurate information and it is spoken, not read!

- Visual aids: the presentation software contains enough slides to support the oral speech; the slides are not loaded with boring amounts of illegible text but amusing images and short pertinent headlines and brief information written in a proper font size and colour to support the speaker.

- Deadline: the submission deadline is met.

Since you have already performed several presentations in Galician classes during the 1st and 2nd term, you should have an idea on how to give a quality oral speech. In any case, should you have any queries, doubts, suggestions, difficulties or comments of the sort, please, email me at labor.teacher@gmail.com.

Best regards,

Raquel

ESO 1: Easter Reading

Oliver Twist ( Helbling ) - $ 499,20 en Mercado Libre

Dear ESO 1 students,

So this unusual second term has officially come to an end and Easter “holidays” are approaching… Certainly not the type of holidays we would dream of, since all of us must remain home for some extra time. In any case, as reading is always a delightful pastime, why not spending your Easter lockdown enjoying a book?

I suggest you have a look at Helbling’s adaptation of Charles Dickens’ Oliver Twist for kids, and read it if you’re in the mood. Note that this reading is voluntary and won’t be marked nor checked.

You can read the online version clicking on the link below. Although it includes some “before reading” and “after reading” activities, the text goes from page 17 to page 66.

Warm hugs,

Raquel

What's Up in the Night Sky for April?

What's Up: April 2020 Skywatching Tips from NASA.

What are some astronomy highlights in the sky in April 2020? This month, Venus visits the Pleiades; Mars, Jupiter and Saturn begin their breakup; and we ask, "What is the Moon illusion?"

Read the video transcription here:

What's Up for April? The Seven Sisters meet the evening star, Mars continues its getaway, and unpacking the Moon illusion.

At the beginning of April, look to the west each evening in the couple of hours after sunset as Venus visits the Pleiades.

Watch each night from the 1st through the 5th, as Venus climbs higher in the sky each evening, crossing through the Pleiades star cluster. The real highlight is on April 3rd, when Venus will appear inside the Pleiades — meaning it'll be in the same field of view through binoculars or a telescope with a wide field of view. This should be spectacular if the weather's clear where you are, so here's wishing you clear skies.

The planetary quartet of Jupiter, Saturn, Mars and the Moon once again make a showing in mid-April. Since giving Jupiter and Saturn the slip last month, the Red Planet continues its getaway from the gas giants in this month's morning skies. Mars begins the month just beneath Saturn, but by the middle of April, it's moved a decent distance away. The Moon swings by on the 14th, 15th and 16th. The three planets won't appear close together in the sky again for a couple of years, so catch them now if you can!

Estudiantes: ¿qué van a hacer con lo que les tocó?

Poetry Translation Quiz

ESO 2, 3 & 4 Students,

1 point up for grabs in the next test for the student to send to our e-mail the first correct answer to this quiz:

Andrew Marvell (1621-1678) wrote the poem To His Coy Mistress (which you can listen here). The first two verses of its third stanza read like this:

Now therefore, while the youthful hue
Sits on thy skin like morning dew...

If you had to translate these two lines into Spanish using the first two verses in a very famous sonnet by a 16th century Spanish poet and soldier... What would your translation be?

Carpe Diem!

April Fools' Day 2020

April Fools' Day or All Fools' Day is a day celebrated in many countries on April 1st. The day is named for the custom of playing practical jokes and hoaxes of varying sophistication on friends, family members, enemies, and neighbours, or sending them on a fool's errand, the aim of which is to embarrass the gullible. Traditionally, in some countries, such as the UK, Australia and South Africa the jokes only last until noon, and someone who plays a trick after noon is called an "April Fool". Elsewhere, such as in Canada, France, Ireland, Italy, Russia, The Netherlands, and the U.S., the jokes last all day.
