ESO 1 Assignments: 1st, 2nd, 3rd April

Dear ESO 1 students,

As this lockdown situation is extended, we will be missing three more English lessons, the ones on the 1^st, 2^nd and 3^rd of April.

Below, you will find the activities proposed for this week: the first two worksheets are related to Youtube videos that you must watch in order to complete the activities. The last worksheet has to do with grammar points already discussed in class. Either you can print the copies to write your answers on them or do it on a separate sheet on your notebook.

ESO 2, 3 & 4 Assignment: 30th March - 19th April

Dear ESO Students,

During this extension of the lockdown situation, you will be missing 3 sessions (remember Easter Holidays extend from Saturday 4th to Monday 13th April). This is your assignment for that period. This is a group task. Just like for a PBL, you will have to do it along with your Olympic colour classmates.

It would be wise to distribute the workload evenly among each and every member of the group; some of you are good at translating, some are good at using image edition software, some are good at writing, some are good at organising teamwork... Now it's the time to use and take advantage of Skype, WhatsApp or whatever Internet communication tools you feel most comfortable with and get this job done!

Your task is to download, translate and adapt this inspirational poster (Just Keep Missing) by artist Gavin Aung Than into the language of your choice: Galician or Spanish.

You should translate EVERY SINGLE WORD IN ENGLISH YOU SEE IN THE COMIC STRIP, create a new jpg or png file and once it is polished and finished, the captain of each Olympic group will have to forward it to my mail... As it is a group task, only one e-mail per Olympic group is allowed (that means 4 e-mails per class or a total of 24 e-mails for ESO 2, 3 & 4). 

Keep the poster as it is: do not change any of the images. Just keep the same layout, fonts and colours as in the original, and substitute the English words (and only the English words, not the words in other languages, e.g., French) with your Galician or Spanish version.

Gavin Aung Than's favourite fonts are Creative Block and Red State Blue State.

Your file identification must be as follows: GROUPCOLOUR_CLASS.JPG or GROUPCOLOUR_CLASS.PNG. Example: RED_3A.PNG.

You must fill in the "subject" section of your mail messages with YOUR GROUP IDENTIFICATION. In your email messages you must also include the full names of each and every member .

No automatic translations are allowed (forget about Babel, Google or any other of those useless translation gadgets) and you bet we will easily find out if you use one: CRIME NEVER PAYS. You will have to use your talent. Make it sound natural.

The deadline is Sunday 12th April at precisely 23:59:59. ATTENTION! NEW DEADLINE! SUNDAY 19TH APRIL at precisely 23:59:59. No messages will be accepted beyond that point.

Remember that in our 'Online Dictionaries' section and our 'Resources' section (which you can find on the right-hand column of this blog) you will find all the tools you need to solve this PBL. Daylight Saving Time 2020

Daylight saving time (DST)—also summer time in several countries, in British English, and European official terminology—is the practice of advancing clocks so that evenings have more daylight and mornings have less. Typically clocks are adjusted forward one hour near the start of spring and are adjusted backward in autumn.

When DST starts in central Europe, clocks advance from 02:00 CET to 03:00 CEST.  

Though mentioned by Benjamin Franklin in 1784, the modern idea of daylight saving was first proposed in 1895 by and it was first implemented during the First World War. Many countries have used it at various times since then.

How to Protect Yourself Against the Coronavirus

Here are some tips for staying healthy and preventing the virus from spreading: 

• Don't Panic. 
• Frequently wash your hands or use a hand sanitizer containing at least 60% alcohol.
• Don't touch your eyes, mouth or nose.
• Clean and sanitize surfaces in your home regularly. The virus will live on surfaces for over 2 hours.
• Practice social distancing. Don't get too close to people, especially if they seem sick. If someone is coughing on the bus near you, move away.
• Cough or sneeze into your elbow and dispose of used tissues.
• If you are sick, stay home, wear a mask around family members, and clean things you have touched.
• If you have a fever, cough, and/or difficulty breathing, call your doctor before going in so they can tell you how to proceed.

Most people get better on their own. There is currently no vaccine or cure to the virus but symptoms can be managed.

Please split and distribute these tasks evenly for those 4 sessions. Do not try and do all of them at one go. A good idea would be to sit down at your usual desk at home at the same time as we would be having our class and work non-stop for 50 minutes.

If authorities decided to extend the present situation, more contents, activities and exercises would be published on this web. So don't worry if you haven't finished all of the activities I am proposing you by Wednesday 25th. Just try and do your best and as much as you can.

• The present perfect with for, since and how long.
• The present perfect vs. the past simple

You have all the information you need on the present perfect, for, since, how long, and the difference between the present perfect and the past simple on pages 84 and 85 of your Workbook, as well as on the Grammar reference section (page 114).

Dear ESO 1 students,

On the images below, you will find the activities to work with during the two following weeks. We will be missing four lessons, the ones on the 18^th , 25^th , 26^th and 27^th of March. You must complete one handout per day. Either you can print the copies to write your answers on them or do it on a separate sheet on your notebook.

For the time being, we will be revising those contents previously studied on unit 4, unit 5 and unit 6, regarding vocabulary and grammar. In case the state of emergency is extended and classes are still suspended, we will be moving forward according to the curriculum, and more contents and activities will be uploaded on this page.

Graduation Speech: ESO 4 2019-20 3rd Term PBL Assignment

ESO 4 Students,

This is your PBL assignment for the 3rd term. All of you have to WRITE and DELIVER your GRADUATION SPEECH.  You have to imagine you are going to stand in the school Assembly Hall before your teachers, classmates, parents and guests at your ESO graduation ceremony (to be held on June 19th) and deliver your speech, which must be at least 350 WORDS LONG.

The best student will be offered the chance to deliver his or her speech at your graduation ceremony... in English!! Of course, he or she will get extra points in the final mark for that effort.

A Consellería de Educación publicou a Orde do ORDE do 10 de febreiro de 2020 pola que se convocan axudas para a realización de actividades de formación en linguas estranxeiras no ano 2020, destinadas ao alumnado dos centros docentes sostidos con fondos públicos.

REQUISITOS: 

• Estar cursando 1º, 2º, 3º e 4º da educación secundaria obrigatoria,1º ou 2º de bacharelato en centros sostidos con fondos públicos que impartan ensinanzas de réxime xeral, durante o curso 2019/20, na Comunidade Autónoma de Galicia.
• Ter superadas todas as áreas ou materias no curso 2018/19.
• Ter acadado no curso 2018/19 unha cualificación mínima de ben no 6º curso de educación primaria para o alumnado de 1º de educación secundaria obrigatoria, e de 6 para o de 2º, 3º e 4º de Educación Secundaria Obrigatoria e de bacharelato na materia de lingua inglesa.
• Para as actividades de integración, estar matriculado/a, no curso 2019/20, nun centro da Rede de centros plurilingües.
• Non ter concedida, no presente curso académico, outra axuda coa mesma finalidade.
• Non estar incurso nas prohibicións para obter a condición de beneficiario,  recollidas na Lei 9/2007, do 13 de xuño, de subvencións de Galicia.

Those who bemoan their lack of language skills forget they have a secret ally in their struggle to master a language: their smart phone: the cell phone gives us instant information on the meaning of words and how to pronounce them. 

Dictionary apps. Download one or two. And use them.

• Audio books. These apps allow you to listen to your favourite works of literature in your target language. Check YouTube. 
• You can have "penpals" from any place in the world. Check WhatsApp.
• Biographies can be read in the original tongue. Check Wikipedia.
• And you can also speak and converse with anybody in the world without spending a penny! Make an effort and check WhatsApp.

All the above can be used anywhere, anytime!

So, don´t give me the song and dance of not having time or free resources, please!

The Graveyard Book: Chapter 1 | Read by Neil Gaiman

Watch and listen to Neil Gaiman read The Graveyard Book, a clever young adult novel that tells the story of Bod. Nobody (Bod) Owens is an orphan adopted by ghosts and raised in the graveyard. The dead and undead teach Bod the lessons of the living while he grows up.

If you need to, remember to turn English captions on (bottom bar) so that you can follow the transcription text as Gaiman reads along.

We are sure this mesmerising reading by the author himself will capture you and once you are done, you will eagerly start searching for the next chapters!

In the dark and scary beginning, the man Jack kills a family with a sharp, long knife. The toddler tumbles from his crib and toddles out the open door and up the hill, escaping Jack.

At the top of the hill, in the graveyard, Mr and Mrs Owens find the baby. They wonder what to do with a live child in their dead world. When someone rattles the gate they think someone has come for the child. A startling flickering ghost of the baby’s dead mother appears pleading with them to keep her child safe. Her panic draws figures from all over the graveyard.

St James's Day 2019

From the lost Paradise to Judgement Day. Pórtico de la Gloria in the cathedral of Santiago de Compostela is the first great movie of mankind, filmed in stone.

Perhaps the chief beauty of the cathedral, however, is the 12th century Portico da Gloria, behind the western facade. This Portico da Gloria in the narthex of the west portal is a remains from the Romanesque period. It is a masterwork of Romanesque sculpture built between 1168 and 1188 by Master Mateo at the request of king Ferdinand II of Leon. The vigorous naturalism of the figures in this triple portal is an expression of an art form, varied in its details, workmanship and polychromy (of which faint traces of colour remain). The shafts, tympana and archivolts of the three doorways which open onto the nave and the two aisles are a mass of strong and nervous sculpture representing the Last Judgment.

• You should solve the activities of the vocabulary, grammar and writing pages in each unit (pages 1, 3, 4, 5 and 8 in every unit)
• You should also complete the three revision sections found at the end of every three units in your student's book: review A (units 1, 2, 3), review B (units 4, 5, 6) and review C (units 7, 8, 9).

Use an A-4 sized notebook to copy the formulation or wording of every activity and underline their key words. Then, translate that wording into Galician/Spanish and solve the activities.

This assignment is NOT COMPULSORY. You do not need to hand in your homework as it will NOT ADD ANY POINTS AT ALL TO YOUR SEPTEMBER MARK. However, we would like to advise you to prepare these activities if you want to be successful in your September remedial exams.

Best 2019 Graduation Speech, by Elena Palacio

Hello everybody, parents, teachers, classmates and guests. Welcome to our graduation and thanks for coming.

This day is very important for all of us because a big change is coming to our lives. I would not like to call it the end, because actually I think this is a beginning. From now on, we have to make some decisions that could influence a lot on our future. We have to make some mistakes to learn, but as Denzel Washinton once said, if you do not fail, you are not even trying.

Seven years ago, I stepped into this school and I was afraid because, even though you do not think I am a very shy person, guess what, I am! I was 9 years old and if you had asked me what I would like to be when I grow up, my answer would have been hairdresser. I remember I was alone having lunch in the playground when Laura came running to me and said: Hi, I am Laura, do you want to be my friend? Then she introduced me to all my classmates and the fear disappeared.

Kyle Terrell Lowry (born March 25, 1986) is an American professional basketball player for the Toronto Raptors of the National Basketball Association (NBA). He attended Cardinal Dougherty High School in Philadelphia and declared for the NBA draft after two seasons of college basketball with the Villanova Wildcats. He was selected by the Memphis Grizzlies with the 24th pick in the 2006 NBA draft.

Lowry's tenacious playing style has often earned him comparisons to a pit bull or bulldog, with many citing his toughness, leadership and instinct for winning plays on the court. Lowry is considered a strong rebounder for his position, as well as an elite defender. He holds the Toronto Raptors' franchise record for triple-doubles, as well as the most made three-point field goals in a season, for the 2013–14 season.

What's up in the night sky for june 2019?

Jupiter is at its biggest and brightest this month, rising at dusk and remaining visible all night. The solar system's largest planet is a brilliant jewel to the naked eye, but looks fantastic through binoculars or a small telescope, which will allow you to spot the four largest moons, and maybe even glimpse a hint of the banded clouds that encircle the planet. And if this leaves you yearning for a closer look, these gorgeous views from NASA's Juno spacecraft, which is currently orbiting Jupiter, make the planet feel almost close enough to touch.

In mid-June, Mars and Mercury appear ultra-close together immediately after sunset for two days, on June 17th and 18th. You'll need a pretty clear view of the western horizon to catch them, as the pair will be only a few degrees above it (and the farther north you are, the lower they'll be). But it should be spectacular if you can manage it.

In the middle of the month, from about June 14th to the 19th, look for the Moon to form a beautiful lineup in the sky with Jupiter and Saturn that changes each night as the Moon moves in its orbit around Earth. While you're out marvelling at this trio, there's a really neat astronomy observation you can attempt yourself, just by paying attention to the Moon's movement from night to night. Okay, imagine a line passing through Jupiter and Saturn, like so. This more or less represents the plane in which Earth and the other planets orbit the Sun. Think of it as a big disk, and you're looking out to the edge of the disk from within it. Look closely and you can see that the Moon doesn't move along the same line. From night to night it moves along its own path, crossing the Jupiter-Saturn line as it moves between the two giant planets on the 18th. This separate path shows that the Moon's orbit is slightly tilted with respect to Earth's orbit around the Sun. This tilt in the Moon's orbit is why an eclipse is kind of a special event. Eclipses occur when the Moon passes into Earth's shadow, or when Earth passes into the Moon's shadow. With the Moon orbiting Earth every month, you might think there would be a lunar and solar eclipse every month as well - with the Sun, Moon and Earth forming a nice, straight line. But instead, its tilted orbit means the Moon misses this lineup most months, crossing Earth's orbital plane at the right time for a lineup with the Sun only a couple of times a year.

There's a lot still to learn about the Moon, and science is one of the reasons NASA has plans for both robots and humans to continue exploring it into the future. Here are the phases of the Moon for June.

Panda bear caretaker: a beautiful job?

While we all keep looking for the ideal job: journalist, doctor, architect, teacher or even football player, working as a panda bear caretaker could be a wonderful yet demanding choice.

Giant panda cubs are adorable fluff balls that squeak and squeal. This endangered species is also incredibly tricky to breed and raise in captivity. In the 1960s, only 30 percent of infant pandas born at breeding centers survived. Today 90 percent survive.

The video below shows how baby pandas are successfully raised and bred in captivity in a panda bear center in China before being released into the wild.

Maybe next time when someone asks you what you want to be when you grow up, you won't hesitate.
