Around the World in 80 Days (Talking Book)

Around the World in Eighty Days (French original title: Le tour du monde en quatre-vingts jours) is a classic adventure novel by the French writer Jules Verne, first published in 1873. In the story, Phileas Fogg of London and his newly employed French valet Passepartout attempt to circumnavigate the world in 80 days on a £20,000 wager (equal to £1,324,289 today) set by his friends at the Reform Club. It is one of Verne's most acclaimed works.

Vigo: Ciudad Fiel, Leal, Valerosa y Siempre Benéfica

Vigo is a city, a port and municipality in the north-west of the Iberian Peninsula, in Galicia, situated on the Ría of the same name on the Atlantic Ocean.

The city of Vigo has 297,124 inhabitants, with an extended metropolitan population of 468,654, making it the 14th-largest metropolitan area of Spain.

The urban area of Vigo is built over both a Pre-Roman hill-fort (O Castro) and a Roman settlement. It is generally accepted that the name Vigo is derived from the Latin word vicus.

Breathe

"Breathe" is a song by Scottish singer Midge Ure released March 22nd 1996, as the first single from his album Breathe.

The song was written by Midge Ure and produced by Richard Feldman.

It was made particularly famous by its use in a popular television advertising campaign of the Swatch, two years after its actual publication.

Daylight Saving Time

Daylight saving time (DST)—also summer time in several countries, in British English, and European official terminology—is the practice of advancing clocks so that evenings have more daylight and mornings have less. Typically clocks are adjusted forward one hour near the start of spring and are adjusted backward in autumn.

Muamba 'Effectively Dead For 78 Minutes'

We give you now the article published by Sky News today about Bolton Wanderers' football player Fabrice Muamba.

Doctors treating Bolton Wanderers' Fabrice Muamba have revealed the player was effectively dead for over an hour after his cardiac arrest on the pitch at the weekend.
They said the 23-year-old was given 15 electric shocks before his heart started beating again following his collapse during an FA Cup game against Tottenham.

Carnival

Carnival is a festive season which occurs immediately before Lent; the main events are usually during February. Carnival typically involves a public celebration or parade combining some elements of a circus, masque and public street party. People often dress up or masquerade during the celebrations, which mark an overturning of daily life.

Comenius 1st Prize Winner - Congratulations Andrea!!

Nine ESO-4 students travelled to Altentreptow, Germany, from January 29th to February 4th, in order to take part in the Comenius School Partnership European Week. There they had the opportunity to get to know their colleagues not only from Germany, but from Poland and Estonia, practise their English and get involved in various cultural activities.

The organization held a logo competition open to every student from the 4 schools involved in the programme and we are proud to announce that our ESO-1 student Andrea Aguado Oliveira's design was awarded the 1st prize thanks to her wonderful design (click to enlarge):

Some Jokes

Your grandfather has just been given a fantastic alarm clock for Christmas, but the instructions booklet is in English and he can't understand it. He has asked you for help because you have been studying English since you were 6 years old (at least!) He trusts you and your skills in English!

1984 by George Orwell

Nineteen Eighty-Four is a classic dystopian novel by English author George Orwell. Published in 1949, it is set in the eponymous year and focuses on a repressive, totlitarian regime. The story follows the life of one seemingly insignificant man, Winston Smith, a civil servant assigned the task of falsifying records and political literature, thus effectively perpetuating propaganda, who grows disillusioned with his meagre existence and so begins a rebellion against the system.
