14th March: International Day of Mathematics 2023

The International Day of Mathematics (IDM), a project led by the International Mathematical Union, is a worldwide celebration. Each year on 14th March (14-3: Pi Day) all countries will be invited to participate through activities for both students and the general public in schools, museums, libraries and other spaces.

The theme for 2023 is Mathematics for Everyone.

As the world faces the COVID-19 pandemic, mathematics provides its models and tools to help us understand, monitor, and control the spread of the virus. It is also used to create weather forecasts and prepare for natural disasters. It warns us of climate change and helps us to anticipate and mitigate its consequences.

Mathematics is central to the efficient organization of societies for the benefit of all citizens. It optimizes transportation and communication networks and enables smart planning and management of health, economic, and social systems. Science and mathematics have a crucial role in steering decisions to promote peace and social justice.

As a common language to the planet, mathematics is an essential part of humankind’s cultural heritage. It is present in arts, music, and games, for human enjoyment and well-being.

Metaphors, mathematics & the imagination, by Roger Antonsen

Mathematics is about finding patterns, representing patterns, making assumptions, and changing perspectives. In this talk, Roger Antonsen highlights the importance of these aspects of mathematics and builds a bridge from metaphors and mathematics to empathy and the imagination.

Roger Antonsen is a researcher, author, mathematician, logician, and computer scientist. He has a PhD in Computer Science and Mathematics, in the field of mathematical logic and proof theory, and he is the author of the book «Logical Methods: The art of abstract and mathematical thinking» (2014).

Through numerous and creative talks, shows, courses, and projects, he combines science, mathematics, and computer science with entertainment, philosophy, and visualizations. In the last years, he has given hundreds of popular science talks, with titles such as "Logic and Games", "Experimental Mathematics", "Coding, Understanding, and Mathematics", "Playing with the Infinite", "Deterministic Chaos and Cellular Automata", and "30 Mathematical Mysteries in 30 Minutes". Presently, Roger works at the Department of Informatics at the University of Oslo as a researcher, lecturer, and science communicator. His vision is to communicate science differently, to inspire creative thinking, and to remove the common misconceptions about mathematics and computer science.

When is Cheryl's Birthday?

This problem went viral after it appeared on a Math Olympiad test for talented students in Singapore. After it was posted to Facebook, the problem went viral generating debate about the correct answer.

Albert and Bernard have just become friends with Cheryl, and they want to know when her birthday is. Cheryl gives them a list of 10 possible dates.

May 15, May 16, May 19

June 17, June 18

July 14, July 16

August 14, August 15, August 17

Cheryl tells Albert the month and Bernard the day.

Albert says, "I don't know when Cheryl's birthday is, but I know that Bernard cannot know either."

Bernard then says, "At first I didn't know when Cheryl's birthday is, but now I do know."

Albert concludes, "Now I know when Cheryl's birthday is."
