Autumn

(Original post at La Letra 15)

Autumn (or Fall in American English) is traditionally the third season of the year. It is time for leaves to fall and time for ocher, sienna, orange and reddish colours to flood the landscape. Autumn also means we are back to school and for many, just as at New Year's time, it is the beginning of new cycle, new plans and new resolutions:quit smoking, trying to study a foreign language, start working out in a gym...

Astronomically, autumn begins on the September equinox (September 23rd in the northern hemisphere and March 21st in the southern hemisphere) and it ends with the December solstice (around 21st December in the northern hemisphere and June 21st in the southern hemisphere.)

In Autumn migrant birds, such as storks, travel to warmer countries. Autumn is harvest time, it is the time to pick the grapes and the chestnut season (in Galicia, El Bierzo and Portugal, for instance, we celebrate 'Magosto', a chestnut party); it is the time for the pig slaughter (not suprisingly the saying goes "St Martin's day comes for every pig") and timeto remember the beloved ones who have left us, on November 2nd, when we celebrate the Day of the Dead.....and, we must not forget Samhain, the Celtic autumn festival...

Autumn in poetry has often been associated with melancholy: The possibilities of summer are gone, and the chill of winter is on the horizon. Skies turn grey, and, due to the shorter hours of sunlight, many people turn inward, both physically and mentally.

At La Letra 15 & Labor English Zone we hope you may find reasons to rejoice when reading us. Have a nice autumn!

Summer has come and passed
The innocent can never last
wake me up when September ends

like my father's come to pass
seven years has gone so fast
wake me up when September ends

here comes the rain again
falling from the stars
drenched in my pain again
becoming who we are

as my memory rests
but never forgets what I lost
wake me up when September ends

summer has come and passed
the innocent can never last
wake me up when September ends

ring out the bells again
like we did when spring began
wake me up when September ends

here comes the rain again
falling from the stars
drenched in my pain again
becoming who we are

as my memory rests
but never forgets what I lost
wake me up when September ends

Summer has come and passed
The innocent can never last
wake me up when September ends

like my father's come to pass
twenty years has gone so fast
wake me up when September ends
wake me up when September ends
wake me up when September ends
